When is the best time to go on a Tanzania safari?

It is possible to go on a safari in Tanzania throughout the year. However, there are two periods of rain in Tanzania:

  • March to June : the longest period
  • October to December : smallest period

Travelers are often advised to take a safari during the dry season which happens to be June to October

For my part, I went on a safari in early June and the weather during my 5 day safari was awesome.

Can we go on a safari in Tanzania without an agency?

The third possibility you have is to contact directly a local guide who will agree to take you on a safari in Tanzania.

Indeed, this solution you avoid paying agency fees. But you should also know that this solution requires you to organize your trip on your own (accommodation, airport transfers etc…).

Many guides accept to take tourists on safari without going through the agencies because their remuneration is more important than that given to them by the agencies.

      1. Hello, if possible I would also like to have the local contacts that you have to organize our safari at a lower cost and that the guide is better paid than going through an agency.

  1. Hello, I just came across your internet page and I would like to contact you because I have a lot of questions that bother me. I would like to go to Tanzania next July but I'm not sure how to organize my stay. The goal of my stay is to see Kilimanjaro, two to three days in the Serengeti park, Tarangire park, Ngorongoro Crater… The rest of the stay would be to take a plane to Zanzibar for 6 to 7 days approximately. Used to organize my stay myself (take a rental car, and go from point A to point B on my own, I don't know if this is feasible in Tanzania. I'm afraid of having to take a Guide for 6 days for example and to miss out on a lot of things. What do you recommend? Is it possible to take a guide to go on a safaris and return to pick up my car later? Anyway !!! I don't know how to do it take and I hope that you will be able to bring me some answers… Thank you in advance Nicolas LOSILLA

    1. Hello Nicolas,
Thank you for your message which makes me very happy. How long do you intend to travel to Tanzania for? When you say you want to see Kilimanjaro, do you want to climb? If this is the case you need at least 5 to 7 days depending on the route you want to take. I don't know if renting a car is what I recommend if you want to do: kilimanjaro, safari and Zanzibar. Public transport like the bus is inexpensive to reach Zanzibar and in Zanzibar transport in dala dala is also cheap and you can visit the whole island like that. If it helps you, look at this article on the itinerary of 3 weeks that I recommend in Tanzania without having to take a tour operator who takes care of everything for you: https://www.gogo-traveling.com/itineraire-tanzanie-3-semaines/
If you have other questions, do not hesitate ! You can also contact me on the email that you will find on the contact page of my site 😉

    2. Hello, we want to go to Zanzibar and Tanzania for 15 days for the month of June.
We want the week of 07 to go to the continent to discover the kilimanjaro, not to climb it but only to see it a little closer and why not a little hike in the surroundings. We also wish to go on a safari in Serengeti Park, Tarangire Park, and Ngorongoro Crater. We do not wish to go through an agency, the local guide option would be perfect for us. Are there any who speak French? Or else with a local French-speaking agency if the first option is not possible. Can you advise us?
      Thanking you.

  16. Hello we are 4 french and come to zanzibar from 23/10 to 04/11. I have not yet decided on our hotel because I am still hesitating. Also if we are on a safari in Arusha it may be unnecessary to keep the room in Zanzibar. What can you offer us as a safari with flight from zanzibar? 2 days and 1 night is enough? Do you have different options for us? Sincerely, Mme Kulpa Géraldine.

    1. Hello Géraldine,
Yes I confirm if you go to Arusha, no need to keep your room in Zanzibar… I will send you an email to make it easier 🙂

  17. Hello Margaux,

Thank you for this very interesting site.
I would like to get the contact details of a local guide for a 5 day safari.
    Thanks again !

  18. Hello Margaux,
I plan to organize a trip to Tanzania. My husband and I went there in 2002 on a tour. It was very good but we would like to do the trip again, with a friend, in more "private" conditions, ie with a French-speaking guide who takes us to places without too many tourists, with a flexible schedule. . We are retired so we can go in the best season to see the big five. We would also like to get to know the “locals” a little better, we had visited a very nice school. On the other hand, the Masai village is too popular!
In short, a safari off the beaten track.
What can you offer us, knowing that I do not like looking too much for plane tickets and that we want to have the full board formula.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hello Agnes,
So I'm not a travel agency, but I'm sending you an email to discuss it 😉
