Safari in Kenya or Tanzania?

Kenya and Tanzania are among the two most visited countries in Africa for safari. Indeed, the fauna and flora in these two countries are extremely rich and above all magnificent.

However, despite the similarities between these two East African countries, some differences exist, among which:

  • National reserves and parks
  • Tourist influx
  • The budget

Safari in Kenya or Tanzania: when is the best time?

Generally, the African continent enjoys a relatively pleasant climate throughout the year.

Kenya and Tanzania enjoy a relatively equivalent climate due to their proximity.

Indeed, Kenya and Tanzania located in East Africa by the ocean share a border in common. Kenya is located in the north of Tanzania.

These two countries have two rainy seasons:

  • March to June
  • October to December

It is therefore preferable to opt for a safari during the dry season which is between June and October in these two countries.

However, going on a safari during the rainy season does not mean that you will have rain during your entire safari.

Also, you must take into account the migration periods, for example, if you want to attend the migration of wildebeest in particular, the ideal period is between March and June, that is, during the rainy season.

Rest assured, it is possible to go on safari at any time of the year in these two African countries.

Safari in Kenya or Tanzania: which national parks?

The main national parks of Kenya:

  • The Masai Mara, probably the most famous park sheltering a very rich fauna
  • Lake Nakuru
  • Nairobi National Park
  • Amboseli reserve
  • Tsavo park

But that's not all because Kenya is home to 52 reserves where you can see the Big Five.

Tanzania's national parks:

  • In the north:
    • The immense plains of the famous Serengeti
    • Tarangire National Park
    • Lake Manyara
    • The Ngorongoro Crater
    • Arusha National Park
  • In the south:
    • Mikumi National Park
    • Saadani National Park
    • The Selous Reserve
    • Ruaha National Park
  • In the West:
    • Katavi National Park
    • Mahale National Park
    • Gombe

Safari in Kenya or Tanzania: what tourist influx?

As explained above, Kenya and Tanzania are among the most visited countries in Africa for safari.

However, there is a real difference between these two countries.

Indeed, Kenya has developed faster in terms of safari offerings. Kenya therefore attracts a very large part of tourists. Indeed, there are many more tourists in Kenya than in Tanzania.

Keep in mind, however, that there are also a lot of tourists in Tanzania but still less than in Kenya.

You may at times find yourself with hundreds of cars beside you when you observe a lion for example.

Obviously, depending on the season there are more or less tourists, but don't expect to find yourself the only car in the Masai Mara during the high season.

Safari in Kenya or Tanzania: what budgets?

The presence of a greater number of tourists in Kenya compared to Tanzania necessarily has an origin. Indeed, Tanzania welcomes a little less tourists, in particular due to the fact that the prices for a safari are higher than in Kenya.

Indeed, the Tanzanian government has preferred to bet on high-end safaris welcoming fewer tourists to preserve the reserves as much as possible, but the counterpart is in the price for tourists.

To give you an idea, a 15 day safari that can sell for US $ 3 in Kenya, will sell for US $ 000 for Tanzania.

It all depends on what you are looking for. If your budget is tight, go to Kenya, you will see beautiful landscapes and varied wildlife despite the tourist mass.

If your budget allows it, I recommend Tanzania which in my opinion is an exceptional country for a safari.

  1. Having done safaris in these 2 countries, I really liked the Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti in Tanzania and Kenya, the Masai Mara remains a must for me when it comes to safari.
The advantage in Kenya is that the guides are allowed to leave the tracks to approach an animal scene (with respect) while in Tanzania it is forbidden which means that sometimes you are really too far to do pretty pictures.

The main attraction for those who wish to make an unforgettable safari is to go there at the time of the great migration. Depending on the season it is in Tanzania or Kenya. I only saw it at the end and I would really like to attend it in "full season" it must be grandiose.

    1. Oh great you had to feast!
Yes indeed the great migration must be really impressive when it comes to the right period! Already I found it impressive the period I went there when we were surrounded by all the wildebeest (it was rather the end of the migratory period)! I imagine that going in the middle of it must be really crazy!
So to choose between a safari in Kenya or in Tanzania, where would you go back on one?
