Comment se déplacer aux Açores?

There is very many things to do in the Azores. The most complicated part is probably choose which islands to visit depending on what you are looking for.

After choosing the island and having seen how to get to the Azores, you are probably wondering how are you going to be able to travel to the Azores?

Well this article is for you!

How to get around an island in the Azores?

Although not always very large, it is nevertheless essential to use a means of transport to move them on an island.

Indeed, for this and depending on the size of the island, several possibilities available to you.

Getting around by taxi in the Azores

This is probably the most expensive means of transport to get around the Azores. However, it can be very interesting if you need a taxi to take you to the airport for example.

Rent a car to get around the Azores

728 * 90 RentalCars French

it's about the best way to get around and visit the Azores. You will find cars for hire on all the islands. However, depending on the island you are going to, the vehicles can be quickly rented. Therefore, I advise you to take it a little early so you don't have to waste time when you're there desperately looking for a car to hire.

I'm telling you that because that's what I did. I hadn't booked a car when I drove to Sao Miguel and we had to wait a few hours at the airport to finally find a car.

On Santa Maria, there were no more cars available to rent, so we had to rent a scooter which we took a while to find as well…

Rent a motorbike or a bicycle to get around the Azores

You also have the option of renting motorcycles / scooters for bicycles to get around the Azores.

You will find several rental shops on the islands.

For the more athletic, by renting a bike you will have the opportunity to explore the Azores at the pace and with the calm of nature. Many walks are accessible by bike.

Regarding the rental of motorbikes or scooters, this is a good alternative to the car when the islands are relatively small. For example, Santa Maria or Corvo or Graciosa are very accessible by scooter due to the small size of these islands.

Getting around by bus or hitchhiking in the Azores

The last possibility available to you for getting around the Azores is by bus or hitchhiking.

During my trip to the Azores, I encountered a few young people hitchhiking only and that worked well according to them. Obviously, hitchhiking in the smaller islands and smaller villages in low season is more complicated. Indeed, you will surely have to wait a little longer since there are not necessarily many passages and cars.

How to move from one island to another in the Azores?

The Azores being an archipelago of 9 islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, there are not many solutions to move from one island to another.

There are two possibilities for this:

  • The aircraft
  • The ferry / boat

On each island you will find a larger or smaller airport. However, be aware that there is not necessarily a direct air connection between each island.

The same goes for the ferry.

I will therefore present to you the sea and air connections that exist today between each island.

Where to land in the Azores?

As mentioned above, you will find an airport on each of the Azores islands.

  • São Miguel (Azores) with the Ponta Delgada João Paulo II Airport (PDL)

  1. Hello,
Do you have any advice for car rentals that are not too expensive?

    Thank you 🙂

    1. Hello,
For car rentals you have to look on the classic sites or look on google maps to find the car rental companies and contact them directly. Since there are not a lot of them, you have to try to do it in advance..
