Visit Geneva in Switzerland in 2 days

Geneva is the second most populous city in Switzerland. Passage almost compulsory for French people visiting Switzerland, the spoken language is French.

Located in the southwest of Switzerland, a short break in Geneva before leaving to visit the rest of the country is a wise choice.

A short visit to Geneva in 1 day or 2 days is a good compromise. If you have 2 days, here is the itinerary, or at least, a selection of things and activities to do in Geneva.

Visit of Geneva in Switzerland in 2 days: Day 1

Obviously the order is only a suggestion, it is quite possible to change the direction of the visits. There are, however, in my opinion essentials.

Cultural tour of Geneva

You can start your visit to Geneva with a rather “cultural and historical” visit of the city, including:

  • Looking walk in the old town : stroll through its cobbled streets and you will find:
    • La Saint Peter's Cathedral which dominates the old town: Built in the 157th century. It has undergone many transformations over the centuries. You can climb to the top of the tower by climbing its XNUMX steps to admire a panoramic view. For the little curious, know that in the basement of the cathedral, there is an archaeological site.
    • La Bourg-de-Four square : ideal for a drink in the heart of the old town. Lovers of historic architecture should find what they are looking for here with the typical narrow houses that characterize the city.
    • The secret passages of the old town : many small secret passages are in the old town, so do not hesitate to get lost there.
    • Many museums :
      • Tavel House
      • Barbier-Mueller Museum
      • International Museum of the Reformation
  • The Place Neuve : one of the main squares in the city of Geneva.
  • Le Bastions Park : at the foot of the old town, this park is very popular with locals. In this park, we find in particular:
    • The reformers wall : there are the statues of four reformers who worked in Geneva (Jean Calvin, Guillaume Farel, Théodore de Bèze and John Knox), and, on each side, the statues of six pioneers or protectors of the Protestant reform in Europe and in the States -United
    • Giant chess games
  • The treille walk : walk on the heights, on the fortifications of the old medieval city with a view of the city. There is notably the longest bench in the world (126 meters)

Visit of the Pâquis district and the Pâquis bath

End this culturally charged day with a short visit to the Pâquis district but above all by taking the time to bathe in the Pâquis bath. Very popular place for the inhabitants of Geneva and the surrounding area.

Indeed, you will have a beautiful view of the famous water jet and the rest of the city of Geneva.

This district is also a union district to spend the evening there.

Visit of Geneva in Switzerland in 2 days: Day 2

Start your second day of your 2-day itinerary in Geneva with a stroll along the shores of Lake Geneva, seeing the unmissable jet d'eau.

Stroll along Lake Geneva and the water jet

Lake Geneva, also called Lake Geneva, is a crescent moon shaped lake that lies between France and Switzerland and has an area of 581 km2.

Seeing this lake is a must when going to Geneva. Indeed, several options are available to you:

  • You can take a boat ride to enjoy the lake
  • Rent a pedal boat or boat to explore the lake at your own pace
  • Simply stroll along the lake on the appropriate paths

During your walk along Lake Geneva, do not forget to get closer to the famous Geneva water jet. Indeed, located on the Eaux Vives jetty, this 140m high water jet dates from the 1950s. Every second 500 liters of water are expelled at 200km / h. This is the major tourist attraction of the city of Geneva in Switzerland.

The flower clock and the Geneva wheel

The English Garden and its flower clock is another must-see during your 2-day visit to Geneva. This is one of the most photographed places in Geneva because we can see the water jet and Lake Geneva in the background.

Also, do not hesitate to take a ride on the Geneva wheel from the top of which you will have a beautiful view of the flower clock, Lake Geneva and its water jet but also the city.

Finally, don't forget to stop for a few minutes to admire the 4 seasons fountain.

Confluence between Rhône and Arve

Take advantage of your afternoon to go and see the confluence between the Rhône and the Arve.

You have two choices:

  • A walk or rent bikes to follow the river to go to the confluence between the Rhône and the Arve
  • Going down the Rhône by buoy: probably the best option if you have the time and a buoy. Allow half a day for this very pleasant activity in summer

Another option would be to go swimming in Lake Geneva 🙂
