Where is Zanzibar located?

Zanzibar is an island archipelago located off the coast of Tanzania in Indian Ocean. Zanzibar belongs to the Tanzania , which is a East African countries which lies between Kenya and Mozambique.

This world famous archipelago of islands is renowned for its magnificent beaches of fine sand, its seabed and all his activities passable on this small Paradise Island.

Zanzibar is mainly composed of two islands :

  • Unguja, the largest island, referred to when talking about Zanzibar
  • Pemba, the second island, located north of the first

A little history ..

Zanzibar history dates back to the first millennium.

Between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, the archipelago has found its way with the trade with Arabia and the Persian Gulf. Trade with the Orient also brought Islam and l'arabic architecture which still characterizes Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar.

During sixteenth century, Zanzibar fell under the Portuguese control, then, at the end of XVIIe century, under the domination of Sultanate of Oman.

From the Nineteenth century the growing interest of Europeans for East Africa and the end of the slave trade led to the decline of the domination of the Sultanate of Oman.

En 1890, Zanzibar entered under British "protectorate", led by Omani sultans, supervised by British colonial representatives.

En 1963, Zanzibar is declared independent.

When to go to Zanzibar?

The Zanzibar archipelago experiences a equatorial climate pleasant all year round.

However, Zanzibar knows two periods of rain:

  • March to May
  • October to December

The best times are therefore the following:

  • January and February
  • July to September

However, you should be aware that conditions vary widely.

For my part, I went to Zanzibar from March to May, the weather was very correct in March and April. But I had a lot of rain in May.

Tanzania, is it dangerous?

La Tanzania, East African country, attracted every year of many tourists coming from all over the world. These tourists come mainly to go on safaris in the many national parks found there.

In cities, many cases of delinquency are reported to tourists. Indeed, many cases assaults and thefts are reported annually. It is therefore essential to be very carrefully when we walk. This is all the more true in big cities, such as Dar Es Salaam ou Arusha. Tourists are advised not to not to walk alone at night. Better to take a taxi ride when possible.

It is recommended to be very careful in places frequented by tourists (hotels, bars etc…).

Outside the cities, it is of course necessary to remain cautious but know that the Tanzanians are very nice all the same.

I part 3 months in TanzaniaAs woman, alone, and I did not have no problem. I met many locals who were ready to help me without asking for anything in return. These people have their hearts on their hands.

Avoid walking around with fancy clothes showing (phones, cameras, jewelry, etc.) so as not to draw too much attention to you. Be satisfied with basic outfits and keep your bag with you.

Zanzibar, is it dangerous?

Zanzibar is an astonishing archipelago due to the different cultures that we can meet there.

Zanzibarites are proud of their archipelago, indeed Zanzibar is known for its low crime rate. However, like everywhere, do not think that there is not.

Of course, the Tanzania is a poor country so do not flaunt your fortune in the street. This may attract malicious people.

Stone Town, capital of Zanzibar is home to a higher crime rate although still very low. There may be flights including.

Where you go, be careful, keep your belongings close to you.

Zanzibar being at 98% Muslim, in order to avoid any problem, be respectful to the locals and dress appropriately (shoulders and knees covered for women).

I have spent 2 months in Zanzibar, in a small village south of Stown Town, I lived in the middle of the village with the locals, I was the only "tourist" and I never had no problem.

As long as you respect the traditions, the premises and the culture of the country and if you do not display your fortune in front of all the inhabitants, nothing should happen to you. However, it is obvious thatone must remain vigilant and careful at all times.
