Single woman traveling in Costa Rica: all you need to know

Le Costa Rica is a trendy destination for a few years now, it has been a small Central American country well known for its impressive biodiversity. It is possible to make many different activities during your trip to Costa Rica and that you leave more or less than 3 weeks.

However, if you are planning to go to Costa Rica on your own, you are probably wondering how it is in this country.

For my part, I left alone in Costa Rica as a woman for 3 weeks and so here is the advice i can give you if you are going to do the same.

Visit Costa Rica alone as a woman

More and more women decide to take their backpack and explore new destinations on their own. A few decades ago, it could be shocking but today it has become something normal or even banal.

I am one of these examples, I went on my first trip alone to Australia then I continued with in particular the Tanzania, Guatemala then Costa Rica more recently. Each country is different with a different culture and when you are a woman, you can sometimes handle certain trips on your own.

As far as Costa Rica is concerned, it is in my opinion a quite pleasant destination for a woman who travels alone.

I can assure you that by going to Costa Rica you will will meet many travelers and especially many solo travelers.

Costa Rica is therefore in my opinion a great choice for someone going on their first trip alone. Women are respected without problem in this country, the inhabitants are of a extreme kindness and are always here to help.

Going alone to Costa Rica: dangerous or not?

To complete the previous section, you should know that the Costa Rica is a relatively ' safe ». Indeed, it is the only country in the world that does not have an army, but it is also the country where people are happiest on earth.

Therefore, it suggests that Costa Rica is not not a very dangerous country despite its location in Central America given that it is surrounded by countries that may be more dangerous (Honduras, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua etc).

Obviously, do not believe that Costa Rica is the land of care bears. Indeed, there is violence, drug trafficking as in border countries...

La most "part dangerous » of Costa Rica is surely his capital San Jose or the border region with Panama. Even if “dangerous” is a big word in this case.

Like everywhere in the world, even in the city where I live, the zero risk does not exist. So you have to be careful wherever you go. And you have to be extra vigilant when you are alone visiting a new country or a new region.

How to visit Costa Rica alone?

Costa Rica is a destination that can easily be visited on your own. Obviously, several options are available to you depending on your expectations, the length of your stay, the itinerary and the activities you want to do and especially according to your budget.

Regarding the means of transport in Costa Rica, two options main available to you: rent a car or travel by bus.

It is not uncommon for a woman alone in Costa Rica to decide to get around by bus for economic reasons in particular. This is what I did for my part during my 3 weeks in Costa Rica. The bus network is relatively well developed in Costa Rica, so you can easily travel around the country by bus.

On the other hand, if your budget allows it, you can easily rent a car if you are alone.

As regards the routes, it all depends on the length of your trip but also on the regions and activities you want to do. For my part here is the 3 week itinerary I followed.

Concerning housing, you will easily find hostels everywhere in the country. Most of these hostels offer beds in dormitories to share with men or women. it's about the cheapest way to stay in Costa Rica.

Traveling in Costa Rica alone: what budget?

Obviously, it is a question not to be overlooked. It is often said that by traveling for two a trip is more economical but I find that this is not always true.

Indeed, the basic Costa Rica is not the most economical destination in Central America. The country is known to be the most expensive country in Central America, it is nicknamed “little Switzerland”… I imagine that gives you an idea of the cost of living there.

However, rest assured, if you have a tight budget to visit Costa Rica, this is quite doable.

To give you an idea, I went to Costa Rica for 3 weeks on a decent budget. For 3 weeks in Costa Rica, count approximately:

  • Internal public transport: around $ 100- $ 200
  • Housing: $ 300 / $ 400 (approximately $ 13 / $ 14 per night in a hostel)
  • Food: $ 300 / $ 400 (around $ 10 / $ 15 per day)
  • Activities : it depends on you but with 200$ you can enjoy it widely

Some tips for traveling alone in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica as in any country or new place you want to visit, it is important to be careful and to keep certain reflexes so that your trip goes as smoothly as possible:

  • Avoid walking alone at night: As everywhere and especially in the capital in San Jose, avoid walking alone at night. Prefer to use taxis or Uber to get around and avoid areas that may be fearful.
  • Wear correct and respectful clothes: in order not to offend locals or catch the eye of some people, try to go unnoticed by choosing appropriate outfits to wear.
  • Watch your stuff, don't leave it unattended: Always keep an eye on your belongings as well in cafes, restaurants but also during transport by bus etc.
  • Find out about tourist activities and agencies to avoid for safety reasons: If you plan to participate in tourist activities through small local agencies, pay attention to the seriousness of these different companies. Do not hesitate to inquire and view the reviews online.
